Boston Philo-harmonic Society is established.
1809
Founded by Gottlieb Graupner, the orchestra is composed of 12 amateur musicians who meet regularly to practice and play together on Saturday evenings. The first permanent orchestra in Boston and possibly the U.S., it performs its first concert under its own name in 1818. Incorporated in 1819, it performs regularly at the Federal Street Theater and the Pantheon. The organization continues until at least 1824.
